Training your dog is not just about showing off nice tricks; it's a fundamental part of building a strong bond and ensuring their safety in the real world.
1. Sit
Sit is the foundation of all training. It shifts your dog's attention onto you and helps manage their impulses. It's the "please" of the dog world.
- Hold a treat close to their nose.
- Move your hand up, allowing their head to follow the treat and causing their bottom to lower.
- Once they sit, say "Sit" and offer the treat.
2. Stay
Before teaching "Stay", your dog must know "Sit". A dog who can rely on the "Stay" command is much safer around open doors or busy roads.
"Patience is the secret ingredient to any successful dog training session. If you are frustrated, your dog will be too."
3. Down
This command can be tricky because it puts the dog in a submissive posture. Keep your training sessions short and always upbeat.
4. Come
Also known as "recall", this command can save your dog's life if they accidentally get off-leash or if you want them to return from a dangerous situation.
5. Leave It
Whether it's dropped medication, chocolate, or something gross on the street, "Leave It" prevents your dog from picking up things they shouldn't.
